David Grand sets the foundations for this training when he shares in Phase 1 and 2 trainings that the core focus of working with higher acuity individuals is deeply connected to the relationship with the brainspotting practitioner. In addition to highlighting the core element of the relationship, he spells out these areas to focus on in the treatment of individuals with high complexity:
1. Individuals in a state of 24 hour flashback
2. Little or no capacity for sleep
3. Parts trapped in a flashback state
4. Little of no capacity to trust
5. Tendency to self-harm or suicidality
6. High levels of self-hatred, self-attack and sense of utter worthlessness
7. Struggling with body distortions
8. Tend to communicate in meta-communications from the most wounded parts

What is high acuity and which client populations are relative to this training?

The Brainspotting High Acuity Care Initiative (BSPHAC) was created to empower practitioners and agencies to better use Brainspotting with the individuals that need it the most – those struggling with higher acuities but what is high acuity? High Acuity is not just a higher level of care but speaks more to individuals struggling with higher and persistent states of activation, more dangerous and complex behaviors, classic individuals with complex struggles such as addiction, complex and developmental trauma, neurodivergency, dissociation and other individuals that are struggling to experience the benefits of brainspotting.

Here is what others that have attended this training have said:
Attending the high acuity training has been transformative for me as a Brainspotting therapist. It has helped me feel competent in using brainspotting to work with my high acuity clients in a manner that is supportive to their nervous system. I have noticed an additional shift in myself as a therapist in how I conceptualize developmental trauma, complex trauma, and other high acuity presentations. Upon completing the training, I have been able to consistently integrate the tools I learned into my practice. I have found these tools to be supportive not only for my high acuity clients, but all of those I work with. As someone who has attended multiple Brainspotting trainings, this one took my work to the next level. It has allowed me to better attune to clients and has given me an increased awareness & skill set to navigate my own limbic countertransference.

I really appreciated the High Acuity Brainspotting training. I found it very helpful with my clients  who were struggling with high activation. This training gave me the tools needed to guide them through the process of brainspotting at a deeper level at a slower pace. I have benefitted myself from the work I did at the training. I have found my clients receptive to this method and appreciate them allowing me to be present with them through their process. Jeff and Steve are always awesome trainers and I always learn a lot at their trainings!
